I've just finished reading Everything I never told you by Celeste NG, and I am sad to say I did not really enjoy this book. The book was based on a girl named Lydia who was found dead, washed up on the shore of the local lake by her family. The book went a bit too deep into detail with the past, before Lydia's death, and failed to describe her family’s and the town's feelings of the present. The “big reveal” at the end was if the death was a suicide, homicide, or just an accident, the author described the cause of Lydia's death in one sentence and I wish she had gone into a bit more detail. Overall, this book definitely will not come to mind whenever I think of "a good book".
I read this book as well. I didn't enjoy it much either--I found it hard to find someone to root for, really to even like at times, in the novel. Do you often read books written for adults, or do you prefer young adult books?
I just started reading the book Murder Is Bad Manners by Robin Stevens, the book is about two girls who attend a boarding school called Deepdean academy for girls. I am really enjoying the mystery aspect of their first case. They decide to start their own detective business and have never had a real case until now. When Hazel leaves her jacket in the gym and runs to go get it before their next class starts, she finds her science teacher, Ms. Bell, dead on the gym floor. Moments later when she returns with Daisy and the Big Girl on watch VO, Ms. Belle is gone. The two girls are desperate to find the culprit, and some evidence. As Daisy said, “Don’t be stupid, we don’t have any evidence yet. We don't even have a body. They’d simply laugh at us. No, we’re on our own. And anyways, this is our murder case.”
The title of your book grabbed me while I was reviewing goals. I wondered if it had any comedic aspect to it, but you don't mention any. Do you think that will appear?
This book sounds very interesting and different. About the disappearing body to the latching title. It seems as if you're really enjoying this book. And a quick question: When you're done reading this book, could I borrow it?
The most recent book I have read is Paper Towns. The book is about a girl named Margo and she goes on a journey to do 11 tasks at night with a boy named Quentin. When they go back acting like nothing happened Margo is missing. Quentin has to find Margo and Margo has left clues for Quentin. He has to work with his friends to find his favorite girl Margo.
My favorite part of Paper Towns is when Margo and Quentin did the 11 things at night. It was more towards the beginning of the book and thats one of the reasons I kept reading. It was fun to read every journey they went on. When I was reading that big part throughout the book I had a mind movie. I could really picture Margo and Quentin doing these things in real life. I have just started If I Stay, but I picked to do Paper Towns because I have only read a couple pages from If I Stay.
I also read this book recently. I really think that this summary of the book is very accurate. I also really liked when Margo and Quentin did the 11 things the night before Margo goes missing.
I am reading Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan, the story starts with a boy named Otto, playing hide and seek in a forest of what seems to be Germany. While waiting to be found in the game he reads a book about three sisters with names of german numbers Eins, Zwei, and Drei. He pauses his book to realized he missed the calling for the game to end. Walking aimlessly around the forest, he falls and injures himself. After his injury, he hears voices of three people. He follows the sound to see three girls that have the names Eins, Zwei and Drei. He discovers that the book is not a story tale, it's a destiny for the three girls. Now the questions is, does it have a happy ending? I love how it really leaves you in suspense and that they are very descriptive about the scenery of the forest, because it helps me have a better picture painted in my mind. The reason I am assuming that this is in Germany, is because of the names of the three girls, and Otto.
Echo sounds like a fascinating book. Is this an author or genre you've read before? And as to the setting, I think that your assumption sounds very logical.
Wow! I think I'm set for my book list, I need to read this book. I believe I've read a book by Pam Munoz Ryan. It was required to read last year, I really liked that book so I'm sure I'll like this one!
The book I’m reading is called ‘Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe’ by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. I’m about one third though the book and I really like it so far. The two main characters, Aristotle and Dante are both alike and different in many ways, and the book follows their wondrous adventures. The author writes each scene in detail, even the minor scenes, so you can really picture in your head what’s going on. In one scene, Ari throws Dante’s sketch book across the room because he doesn’t feel like he deserves to see Dante’s art. Benjamin Alire Sáenz went into a lot of detail about how Ari was so angry and how Dante was only trying to help Ari. The book is written in perspective of Ari, and so you get to see more of his life. But, whenever Ari and Dante are together, the author scatters facts about Dante’s life so you can know both of the characters really well. I hope I will continue to like this book and like the ending as well!
Morgan, you explain both the book itself and what you are enjoying very well. Using clear examples helps support your ideas. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the rest of the book!
The current IR book I’m reading is called The Kill Order by James Dashner. It is a Sci-Fi book, and it is the prequel of the Maze Runner Series. The book is mainly about our world coming close to extinction. In the beginning, the sun gets too close to the Earth, wiping out about half of the Earth. Billions of people die but some people survive and manage to get to the Appalachian Mountains. The main character, Mark, who is one of the survivors settles in a small town with other survivors, trying to live a normal life. But one day, a few planes, known as bergs, fly down towards the town. The people from the bergs start shooting the survivors with darts. The darts contain a deadly virus of rage and lunacy, which is also highly contagious. The part of the book I am reading right now, people are running away from the infected. I am thoroughly enjoying the book because it explains numerous important things that weren’t mentioned in the trilogy. For example, it explains how Thomas, the main character of The Maze Runner, got into the Maze. Also, it informs you how WICKED, an organization built to find a cure for the disease, was formed. I also like all of the action in the story. So far, this book is awesome and very informative. I can’t wait to find more information by reading the rest of the book.
Alex, I read the trilogy but not this book and often wondered if I should. You do a great job making me want to read it and explaining why you are enjoying the book. Let me know when you finish if I should put it on my must-read list!
I still remember going to the movie theatre to watch the first movie with you! I knew once we left that theatre that you would love the series. I'm glad I was right.
My most recent book that I read is called Paper Towns, by John Green. The two main characters are Margo and Quentin. It is a Mystery novel. Margo comes through Quentin's bedroom window un-expectedly. They go and do 11 tasks like break into SeaWorld or put a fish in the car of one of Margo's enemies. When Margo goes missing after their adventure, Quentin has to go to and find her, with the help of his friends. She left small clues that don't make any sense to anyone except for Quentin, and thats all he has left of her to go and find her.
The part I really like in this book is when Quentin goes into the abandoned minimall for the first and second time because it really showed the depth of the story. "I don't know who she is anymore, or who she was, but I need to find her," was one of the quotes that really stuck with me. This quote was implying that Quentin thought she was dead or ran away forever, and all he wanted to do was find her. This book was really great and the ending was a little fast, but other than that I fully enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read more books like it.
My most recent book was Paper Towns too. I really liked your summary, and I liked how you included a quote from the book as well. I also, enjoyed the book.
The book I am currently reading is called Girl Online. It is by Zoe Sugg, a famous Youtuber. The main character Penny is a very shy girl so she creates a blog to try and deal with her difficulties. She goes undercover under the alias of Girl Online. Penny blogs about friendship problems, boys, her family, and the panic attacks that have been driving her crazy. Penny is also starting to outgrow one of her best friends. She feels as if her friend Megan, has changed and is not the same fun girl she used to be. Penny’s best friend is named Elliot. Penny tells Elliot everything because she knows she can trust him. Penny is one day working in her mom’s wedding shop when a rich American couple come and ask her if Penny's family could organize a huge wedding in New York. When Penny tells her parents, they agree to do it but ask Penny to go to New York with them. Penny has not told her parents about her panic attacks so they don’t know about her fear of flying in airplanes. One morning Penny can’t hold it in any longer and tells her parents about her panic attacks. Her parents are very understanding and tell her that they will help her overcome the attacks. At the part I am currently at, Penny is in the airport and is very nervous. Elliot tells Penny to come up with a fearless side of herself that she can always rely on to make herself feel better. She names her Ocean Strong. I am really enjoying this book and I’m eager to know what happens when Penny gets to New York, if she gets New York.
Talla, this book sounds really great! I usually don't read this genre of books but, this book has really convinced me. I liked how you summarized it. I can't wait to here more about the books you read.
As the one and only Harry Potter walks through Diagon Alley you feel like you’re right next to him. It is no longer the three friends, it’s four. You, Harry, Hermione and Ron are all right next to each other in the Goblet Of Fire, but there’s a twist. Someone has entered Harry into the Triwizard Tournament under a different school name. There are normally 3 wizards participating, 1 from each school. Harry’s friends are beginning to turn on him. Ron seems to be growing jealous. Then comes the first task! As you walk under the invisibility cloak right next to Harry you see three dragons! You can feel Harry’s emotions jumping right out of the page! When Harry’s scar begins to tingle so does your body with all the tension built up by JK Rowling. I can’t wait to reread it! It is my favorite book in the series and it is the first one that comes to mind when someone says You-Know-Whos name. I open at the close, is really what this book is all about. The emotions building up and everything happening so fast and so sudden. At the end you’re left in shock. You might find yourself asking, “What have I just read?”
I really liked how you were in the story with Harry and his friends. You had description on what was happening on the Goblet of Fire story. Would you recommend this book to others?
I really enjoyed how you did your summary in 2nd person. I really felt like I was in the story. I like your ending line because it is different from everybody else's. Maybe I will consider reading this book.
The book I am reading is Safekeeping by Karen Hesse. I just picked it out of the library. The title appealed to me and the first words of the story caught my interest. I am reading it and I really like it. Radley is the main character in this book. Radley comes home from volunteering in Haiti only to find that her parents aren’t there. She has had over a 24-hour flight due to delays and drama. Radley only wanted to come back home to Vermont to be with her family. She had just found out that the president in her home country had just been assassinated. Her parents had warned her that all hell would break loose if the American People’s Party took over. Radley’s cell phone is dead, her credit card shut down, and she doesn’t have money. Radley calls her parents from a mini mart only to find out that their phone had been disconnected. Only with 50 cents, a pack of gum, and a passport, can Radley make it home in time to see her family?
You do a great job summarizing what's happening, but I'd love to hear more about what you're enjoying about it. What is compelling to you? The characters? The plot?
I think this is a great book and hope you love it!
I love how you described why you chose the book, and then went on to explaining what has happened so far. I have to agree with Ms. McKain though, since you described the book so well I would like to hear your thoughts about the plot and they way the book is written.
I have just started reading Standing Next to History by Joseph Petro (for the second time). I think the book is great because I it goes into a lot of detail. The author explains everything with a real life example. The book discusses a lot about historical events and about the special agent’s career in the Secret Service. I don’t think the prologue is very catchy and can include more drama. Once you get about three pages into the book it is hard to put down. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in presidential politics or national security.
Is it non-fiction? That is the way it sounds from your comments. Do you often read about historical events and politics? If you enjoy those topics, I think you will enjoy the subject matter of our first course text, All the Broken Pieces.
I am currently reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and although I did not go too far into the book I am enjoying it a lot more than I thought. It starts of with an angel taking about a girl who she refers to as The book thief But the the catch is that this isn't any angel, this is a angel of death. She walks around and collects the souls of the dead but sometimes she arrives early. The angel is remembering what has happened in the past and when she first met The book thief and know the angel introduces the girl's name as Liesel. The angel of death talks about the beginning when she entered a to train to early meaning someone was about to die. That someone was Liesel younger brother. There mother was sending them to a foster family because she could not raise them. Liesel with one eye closed dreaming of Adolf hitler and the other eye open saw her brother collapse. Liesel and her mother drag the body out of the train and began to cry on the corpse. This shows that the book will be very devastating and depressing instead of a happy ending like a unrealistic disney movie.
The Angel then tells us the last time she met the book thief and how she died. Although the book told the ending and death of the main character in the beginning (huge plot twist) the book was so well written you want to continue it and try to find out how the story came from the beginning to the end. There are some german words in the story to make it interesting and to increase your german vocabulary. Ii love how the author put the story in the angel of death's perspective and I love how he makes every word in each sentence descriptive and detailed and dramatic. I can't wait to read what troubles Adolf hitler will cause for the Liesel to become the late Liesel Meminger!
Wow--I think it's a challenge with this book to know who the narrator is, so it's great you figured it out so quickly. It's a fascinating, well-written book, and I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I think you did a good job describing the book, but do you find it troubling that throughout the book, you're just waiting for the main character to die?
I knew the main character was going to die because the story takes Time during Nazi Germany. Chances of Liesel living was low and it would add a lot of drama to the story and make it interesting because as humans we are sometimes satisfied with a sad ending because it gives you a taste of reality.
I have been liking Harry Potter #6 so far, but I'm at one of those points in time where J.K. Rowling is in a describing stage of her book. Now, I normally don't mind describing parts, but I feel like 100 pages of it is a bit of a stretch. On the bright side, however, the describing parts are quite interesting. In the beginning, the Prime Minister of England (Talla, please correct me if I'm wrong in saying that England is the country with the Prime Minister and not Great Brittan), knows about the world of magic and that Cornelius Fudge (The "Other" Minister) has just been sacked. Also, two of the most wanted Death Eaters in the country visit Severus Snape at midnight. Severus Snape has Wormtail with him. The Death Eaters tell him that Draco Malfoy, one of the Death Eaters' son, was sent to do a nearly impossible mission by Lord Voldemort. Snape then makes an unbreakable promise with the Death Eaters that he will help Draco with the mission. This left me with some questions. Is this really Snape? Is Snape under the Imperious Curse? This book has me hooked!
I only watched the movies for harry potter but you make me want to read the full book and assuming you read the other 5 books which book did you enjoy the most.

This shows that the book will be very devastating and depressing instead of a happy ending like a unrealistic disney movie.
ReplyDeleteThe Angel then tells us the last time she met the book thief and how she died.
DeleteI think you described the book very well! good job!
DeleteI think you did a good job describing the book, but do you find it troubling that throughout the book, you're just waiting for the main character to die?
DeleteI knew the main character was going to die because the story takes Time during Nazi Germany. Chances of Liesel living was low and it would add a lot of drama to the story and make it interesting because as humans we are sometimes satisfied with a sad ending because it gives you a taste of reality.
DeleteI have been liking Harry Potter #6 so far, but I'm at one of those points in time where J.K.
ReplyDeleteI only watched the movies for harry potter but you make me want to read the full book and assuming you read the other 5 books which book did you enjoy the most.
